Scholarship First Bus Tour
LSU Sets Out on 2024 Scholarship First Bus Tour
LSU President William F. Tate IV embarked on the second Scholarship First Bus Tour from October 15-18 with a goal to align LSU's priorities with the state’s needs, demonstrate the many ways its research supports Louisiana’s people and economy, and explore new pathways that drive even greater impact.
The tour began with a kick-off event at Start Elementary with special guests including Congresswoman Julia Letlow and a performance from country singer and LSU student Timothy Wayne, nephew of Tim McGraw.
Powered by A. Wilbert’s Sons, the bus will cover nearly 1,000 miles in four days, bringing President Tate and the LSU team around the state for hands-on opportunities to experience some of Louisiana’s leading industries.

The final day began with a tour of a manufacturing facility at Performance Contractors. Participants then visited the Bridgeview Gun Club alongside the 4-H Championship Team.
Scholarship First in Action
LSU researchers are helping to address food preservation issues such as spoilage and contamination by bacteria through their work with chitosan, a natural substance created from the shells of crustaceans.
LSU researchers have developed a device capable of detecting cancerous tissues during surgery with unprecedented speed and accuracy. This technology could significantly reduce the likelihood of cancer recurrence and improve patient survival rates globally.
ADHD treatment can be expensive, frustrating, and overwhelming. But LSU Associate Professor of Computer Science David Shepherd’s research may just revolutionize that treatment by using virtual reality and noise-canceling headphones to help with focus.
For 15 years, the LSU Superfund team has been protecting communities from pollution and leading the worldwide science on environmentally persistent free radicals.
Julia Cazabon, a medical student at LSU Health New Orleans from River Ridge, Louisiana, is the first to receive full support through the Marcia and Billy Beer Endowed Scholarship Fund to attend all four years of medical school for free, thanks to a historic $7.5 million leadership gift—the largest ever to the LSU Health New Orleans Foundation.
