Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was founded November 17, 1911, at Howard University by Edgar A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper, and Frank Coleman—three liberal arts undergraduate students— with help from their faculty advisor, Ernest E. Just. From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning “friendship is essential to the soul,” the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. The phrase was selected as the motto. Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift were adopted as cardinal principles. The Theta Kappa chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity was chartered at LSU on March 12, 1977, by 13 distinguished men and the chapter has grown to over 150 sons of Theta Kappa. Their chapter has a proud and rich history at LSU, as some of Theta Kappa’s members have been trailblazers, not only for the LSU campus, but also for the greater community. They are the first Black Greek lettered fraternity to be founded on LSU’s campus and are the founders of LSU’s National Pan-Hellenic Council. Observing over 45 years of Theta Kappa’s existence, the chapter celebrates Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift on the campus of LSU and will continue to celebrate these Cardinal Principles into eternity.
