About the Keynote
What can the color green suggest about teaching? "Teaching Green" reflects on the variety of senses evoked by the word in order to ask specific questions about our shared dedication to creating knowledge with students. How can we teach with renewed, evergreen hope and energy? What reservoirs sustain our pedagogical endeavors, making it possible for us and our students to flourish in our instructional spaces? How can we teach with a strategic naivete—the spirit of experiment and creativity we have and had as new and "green" faculty members—at every stage of our instructional life? And how do we contribute our research and teaching in every discipline to a whole-of-university approach to serving our communities, especially amid the climate emergency?
About the Speaker
Chris Barrett is Associate Professor of English at Louisiana State University, where she joined the faculty in 2012 after completing her doctoral degree in English at Harvard University. She also serves as Dean's Fellow in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences. Barrett's research and teaching interests include ecocriticisms, early modern English literature, poetry and poetics, critical animal studies, and geocritical approaches to literature. Her published works, recognized by a Rainmaker Award in 2018, include the book Early Modern English Literature and the Poetics of Cartographic Anxiety (Oxford University Press, 2018), as well as articles and essays on topics including forests, Shakespeare, Milton, butterflies, compasses, whales, maps, fire, ether, birdsong, and knock-knock jokes. Her research has been supported by the Council on Research, the Newberry Library, the Folger Library, the Dumbarton Oaks Museum and Collection, the Lilly Library at Indiana University, and the Friends of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries. Barrett has been the recipient of several teaching awards, including the inaugural Outstanding Professor Award from the LSU Student Government (2018), the Tiger Athletic Foundation President’s Award (2017), the Tiger Athletic Foundation Undergraduate Teaching Award (2014), and the English Graduate Student Association Graduate Faculty Award (2014), as well as the Brij Mohan Distinguished Professor Award (2020) for her work with LGBTQIA+ campus communities.
